This Christmas season, we’re preparing our hearts for the arrival of Jesus by going back to where the Christmas story really begins.
From the first pages of Genesis to the manger in Bethlehem, Christmas is the thread running through the whole Bible. It’s a story within God’s bigger story about how God plans to rescue the people He loves.

VIDEO SUMMARY
Have you ever watched the sunrise?
At first, everything is hidden in darkness. Then slowly, the light begins to break across the horizon, revealing a world that was there all along.
That's the picture Matthew uses to describe the beginning of Jesus' public ministry.
For centuries, God had been preparing the world for the arrival of His Son. Through promises, prophets, ordinary people, and unexpected places, He had been writing a story that pointed toward Jesus Christ.
Now, standing on the shores of Galilee, the waiting is over.
The Light has dawned.
Jesus begins announcing that the Kingdom of Heaven has come near. He calls ordinary fishermen to follow Him, and everything begins to change.
But His invitation wasn't only for people living beside the Sea of Galilee two thousand years ago.
It's an invitation that still reaches us today.
The story of Arrival doesn't end with the coming of Jesus. It leads to a personal invitation to follow Him.
REFLECT & DISCUSS
Use these questions for personal reflection or conversation with others.
→ THE LIGHT: What does Jesus reveal?
Read Matthew 4:12–16 and John 8:12. Matthew describes Jesus' arrival in Galilee as light dawning on people living in darkness. What kinds of darkness do people experience today? How does Jesus bring light into our understanding of God, ourselves, and the world?
→ THE KINGDOM: What does it mean that God's Kingdom has come near?
Read Matthew 4:17. Jesus began His public ministry with the announcement, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near." What do you think Jesus meant by that? How is His Kingdom different from the kingdoms and systems of power we see in our world?
→ THE RESPONSE: Why does Jesus call us to repent?
The word repent involves a change of mind and direction. Why is repentance an appropriate response to the arrival of God's King? Are there attitudes, priorities, or habits in your life that Jesus may be inviting you to reconsider?
→ THE INVITATION: What does following Jesus actually mean?
Read Matthew 4:18–22. Jesus didn't simply invite the fishermen to admire Him or agree with His teachings. He said, "Follow Me." What did responding to that invitation require of them? What might following Jesus require of us today?
→ THE JOURNEY: Where does the story go from here?
Think back over the Arrival series. We've seen God's promises, Mary's surrender, Joseph's obedience, Bethlehem's preparation, and Jesus' ordinary years in Nazareth. Which part of this journey has most changed your understanding of Jesus? How might that discovery shape the way you live?
3. Discover: Living the Story
Throughout this series, we've been discovering how God prepared the world for the arrival of His Son.
But now the question becomes personal.
What am I going to do with Jesus?
It's possible to appreciate His story, admire His teachings, and even believe the facts about His life without actually following Him.
This week, spend some time reflecting on Jesus' invitation: "Follow Me."
Ask yourself:
Is there something I'm holding on to that's keeping me from following Jesus more fully?
What would taking one intentional step toward Him look like this week?
Perhaps that step is beginning to read the Gospels, spending time with Jesus in prayer, making a difficult change, serving someone in need, or trusting Him with an area of your life you've been reluctant to surrender.
Don't simply finish watching the story.
Take your next step in following the King.
A PRAYER
Father, thank You for the extraordinary story of Your love and faithfulness. Thank You for the promises You made, the people You called, and the generations through which You prepared the world for the coming of Your Son. Above all, thank You for Jesus, the Light of the World, who came to reveal Your heart and invite us into Your Kingdom. Open our eyes to see Him more clearly. Give us the courage to turn from whatever keeps us from You and the faith to follow Jesus wherever He leads. May the story we've discovered become the life we now live. In Jesus' name, Amen.
COMING 2027 — FOLLOWING THE KING
