Arrival Week 3: JOSEPH — WHEN GOD INTERRUPTS YOUR PLANS

This Christmas season, we’re preparing our hearts for the arrival of Jesus by going back to where the Christmas story really begins.

From the first pages of Genesis to the manger in Bethlehem, Christmas is the thread running through the whole Bible. It’s a story within God’s bigger story about how God plans to rescue the people He loves.

VIDEO SUMMARY

Have you ever made plans for your life, only to have everything change unexpectedly?

Perhaps it was a diagnosis, a broken relationship, a career disappointment, or an unexpected responsibility. Suddenly, the future you imagined looked very different.

Joseph understood what that felt like.

He was preparing to marry Mary when he discovered she was pregnant. His plans were interrupted, his future became uncertain, and he faced decisions he never expected to make.

Yet Scripture describes Joseph as a righteous man. Although the Bible never records a single word he spoke, his actions reveal extraordinary faith.

In Episode 3, we discover that Joseph's quiet obedience anticipated many of the lessons Jesus would later teach His disciples: trusting God, surrendering our plans, refusing to be ruled by fear, and following one faithful step at a time.

Joseph wasn't the Savior. But his life points us toward the Savior—and shows us what it can look like to follow Him.

REFLECT & DISCUSS

Use these questions for personal reflection or conversation with others.

→ THE INTERRUPTION: What happens when life doesn't go as planned?

Read Matthew 1:18–20. Imagine Joseph's confusion and disappointment when he learned Mary was pregnant. How do you typically respond when circumstances interrupt your plans? What makes trusting God difficult in those moments?

→ THE CHARACTER: Who are we becoming before God calls us?

Matthew describes Joseph as a righteous man before the angel appeared. Why is character more important than recognition, influence, or achievement? What qualities might God be developing in you through your present circumstances?

→ THE JOURNEY: Can we trust God without knowing the destination?

Read Matthew 2:13–15 and 2:19–23. Joseph repeatedly responded to God's direction without knowing everything that lay ahead. Where in your life are you waiting for the whole plan when perhaps God is asking you to take the next faithful step?

→ THE DISCIPLE: What does Joseph teach us about following Jesus?

Read Matthew 16:24–25. Joseph surrendered his plans, faced uncertainty, and welcomed Jesus into his life and home. How do these actions reflect the kind of discipleship Jesus later called His followers to embrace? Which of these qualities challenges you most?

→ THE GREATER STORY: Who is the real Hero?

Joseph played an extraordinary role in God's plan, but he wasn't the Savior. How does Joseph's faithfulness point us toward Jesus? Why is it important that our admiration for biblical heroes ultimately leads us to Christ?

3. Discover: Living the Story

Think about an area of your life where you're experiencing uncertainty, disappointment, or an unexpected change.

Perhaps you've been asking God to explain what He's doing.

This week, try asking a different question:

  • Instead of, "Lord, why is this happening?" ask, "Lord, what would faithfulness look like for me today?"

Identify one practical step you can take to honor God in your present circumstances.

It might mean forgiving someone, having a difficult conversation, serving another person, releasing a plan you've been holding tightly, or simply continuing to do what's right while you wait.

Remember, faith isn't knowing how everything will work out. Faith is trusting the One who leads us.

A PRAYER

Father, thank You for the example of Joseph, a man whose quiet faithfulness speaks so powerfully across the centuries. Forgive us for the times we've insisted on understanding everything before trusting You. When our plans are interrupted and the road ahead seems uncertain, give us the courage to follow You one step at a time. Shape our character, deepen our trust, and teach us to surrender our lives to Your purposes. Above all, help us keep our eyes on Jesus, the One Joseph welcomed and the Savior we are called to follow. Amen.
